Last night Tiger Hill was busy to wear
the cloth of white frost. This was the closest snowfall this
season here, after another fall in the trekking-destination
of Sandakphu around two weeks ago. Snow fell last night in
the upper reaches of the Singalila range. Four inches of snow
was there in the Tiger Hill to receive the visitors who came
there to enjoy the snowfall biting the cold wind. Local people
said that the snowfall started from 11 p. m. last night and
continued for around 45 minutes. Jalapahar, an area adjoining
Tiger Hill, received snowfall last night. Local people become
tension free for the last night’s rainfall since the
fear of water scarcity during the lean April-May period is
haunting people here. There were no problems for the vehicle
to run because of this snowfall. Aditya Tamang, an employee
of the DGHC engineering section said, `This is wonderful.
We had to trek to Tiger Hill last year. This time our vehicle
went all the way up, we enjoyed ourselves there and then came
down,` Ghoom and Sukhiapokhri, on the outskirts of the town,
witnessed hailstorms today. Subir Sarkar, in charge of the
weather station in North Bengal University said a western
disturbance across the region was responsible for the snowfall
and it would continue for last 24 hours. `There are chances
of fresh snowfall,` Sarkar said.
