A new post office has come up at the Indo-Chinese
boarder at Nathula. The trip to Nathu-la is one of the principle
attractions of Sikkim tour for many. But the ban on photography
by the Indian army has meant that tourists return from Nathula
without any proof of their visit.
Next time when they visit Nathula, tourists
will be able to send a mail direct to home from this Himalayan
Abode. This will definitely entail something more tangible
than stories of a memorable handshake with Chinese soldiers.
At Nathula, one can come face to face with the Chinese authorities
which is one of the few border areas in India.
The Indian Postal Department has decided
to set up a post office at Nathula, situated around 12,000
ft above sea level. John Samuel, the post master general North
Bengal and Sikkim said, “We want to set up a post office
in Nathula through which the tourists may be able to post
their letters from this place. The letter will bear the mark
that it has been posted from Nathula, they went for visit.
A location has already been identified to set up this post
office and soon they will persue the matter with the Indian
Army. It is expected that the Nathula will open in September
and the traffic of this area will be increased. Taking into
consideration the hostile weather conditions at Nathu-la,
the proposed post office will operate their service only for
those months in a year when tourists come here to visit this
place.
