The government has taken fresh initiatives
to improve the commuting facility at the NJP rail station
near Siliguri. A few decisions has been taken to make the
station tout free. Various government departments have decided
to make a knot and launch a joint fight to rescue the tourist
from the hands of touts, taxi-drivers and parking-lot attendants.
At a meeting held in New Jalpaiguri today,
a 10-member Tourism Facilities Augmentation Committee has
been formed in the presence of Tourism Minister Mr. Dinesh
Dakua. The railways, Tourism department, Police, Siliguri
Municipal Corporation, Jalpaiguri district administration,
Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority, Eastern Himalayan
Travel and Tour Operators’ Association and Focin has
their representatives in this committee. Representing the
Department of Tourism, Mr. Gopal Lama said that the committee
will ensured that commuters will not face any problem in New
Jalpaiguri in the future.
One major problem of the commuters is that
the pre-paid taxi booth is closed most of the time and the
drivers pick passengers from outside at a higher rate. Another
problem is fleecing by parking-lot attendants who charge Rs
10 instead of railway approved rate of Rs 5. Dakua said, `We
will not care even in the case of Citu and we will take strong
action against those who harass the travelers.` The railways
will display parking rates at conspicuous locations from tomorrow.
The Jalpaiguri additional superintendent of police, said,
`More personnel will be deployed at the station form tomorrow.` |
