The air service from the heritage town
of Coochbehar to Kolkata is expected to start as early as
January 2007. The hope was expressed by the officers of the
Air Authority of India in Coochbehar today.
The officials visited the Coochbehar airstrip
during the day and also met government officials of the district
including the zella sabhadhipati Mr. Ananta Kumar Roy and
district magistrate Mr. Ravi Inder Singh. The AAI team was
lead by its executive director Mr. T. K. Das. The air service
has remained closed since 1994. After the meeting Mr. Das
said that the infrastructure development work will start from
next month and they expect that they will be able to operate
the service within 18 months. A 40-seater aircraft will be
operated from Cooch Behar to Kolkata via Bagdoga. To make
an on the spot study the AAI officials visit the proposed
airstrip today. According to Mr. Das the centre has already
sanctioned 20 crore for this purpose. The length of the runway
will also be increased. The District administration has been
asked to acquire 24 acre plot by diverting river Torsha during
dry season and also to improve the approach road. The process
to acquire the plot has already been started. Once the proposed
airstrip reopened this area will be able to receive high profile
tourists. It will help to increase the economic status of
the district and the tourism industry will also be helpful.
