Demand for tourism infrastructure at Mongan

The town of Mangan in North Sikkim is known for its scenic beauty. But tourist arrival here has been far from satisfactory. A reason often sighted by the local people is the bad condition of approaching road. Local hoteliers are angry at the authorities lack interest in improving the situation.

Tourism is their main source of Income for much of the local population and a lack of tourist interest has caused substantial difficulty for the local.

In a recent meeting held between the representatives of Mangan Tourism Development Committee and local hoteliers, there was a demanded that Tourism Department be done away with. Many here are of the opinion that local NGO`s would do a better job than the tourism department. The meeting also discussed with some local NGO`s who are ready to take the charge. The meeting also demanded that the inner line permits be issued from Mangam which will help improve movement of tourists in the area. They also demanded a grant of Rs. 2 lakh for the annual musical festival of Mangan.
