Throughout the world, Sikkim is known
for its exquisite flora and fauna. Unfortunately enough, much
of the species are yet to be enlisted and a inventory is yet
to be prepared. A number of international racketeers are known
to be engaged in the smuggling of these rare species.
Lack of a proper inventory has made the
job of protecting the indigenous species even more difficult.
There have been a few attempts to enlist them and even those
were abandoned after some time owing to bureaucratic red tape.
A senior forest department official said, `An international
smuggling racket of Sikkimese rare plants have been unearthed
here. We need a proper inventory. It should have been made
a long time ago. The forest department has already announced
a red alert for the smugglers and the forest department with
the help of police is keeping a constant vigil.`
