Chief Minister Budhdhadev Bhattacherjee
along with daughter Suchetana and Forest Minster Jogesh Barman
visited the Khayerbari Leopard Rescue Centre yesterday. Kalyan
Das, the divisional forest officer of Cooch Behar, escorted
them. The chief minister was thrilled while spotting the leopards.
He quizzed Mr. Das on several issues related to the welfare
of the animals.
The CM seemed happy with the health of the
captive animals and was interested in their age and rehabilitation
plans. Khayerbari has turned out to be an attraction for the
tourists visiting Dooars. The cats rehabilitated in the centre
include orphans, circus animals and rescued leopards. Chief
Minister also inaugurated a watch tower just beside the enclosure.
Many tourists come here to see the leopard but there is not
enough battery operated vehicles available for everyone. Thus
the watchtower would fulfill a long standing need of the centre.
The CM also handed over Rs. 52,000 to six forest committees
as their share of the revenue collected from tourists visiting
khayerbari.
