The tea planters willing to promote tea
tourism are worried about the potential of the venture in
the absence of support from forest department. According to
the Dooars Branch of Indian Tea Association (DBITA) officials,
two gardens, namely Samsing and Hila have been identified
for tea tourism in the fast phase and in the second phase
seven or eight garden is planned to be included to promote
tea tourism. This gardens will start tourism activity on an
experimental basis.
Experts feel the main attraction of Dooars
will remain its forests and in the absence of proper support
from forest department the project might fail. The Union Forest
and Environment Minister has refused to certify much tourism
activity in the forests. This has caused substantial concern
among the tea planters. The planters feel that only tea garden
may not be able to attract tourists. There has also been attempt
to open the existing golf course for the tourists. Some Japanese
groups have shown interest to come to the region to play golf.
