Surrounded with snow and hill slopes,
Kupup is a brand new pastime for the travelers visiting Sikkim.
The area Kupup is situated at an altitude of 13,025 feet in
East Sikkim. The area has been chosen as the skiing point
of Sikkim. The Indian Army’s Block Cat Division started
training of skiing here for the civilians as part of their
`Sadbhawana` projects.
The local people including the children
and the elders are queuing up for the latest craze. There
is also an opportunity for the local people to get this as
a full time profession. The only famous skiing point in India
is in Auli in Uttaranchal.
In a press meet the state army official said that the local
people will be trained by the expertise and they will get
more knowledge about their surroundings. They will be provided
enough training by the army about skiing. After getting the
enormous enthusiasm and interest from the local people the
army took up the initiative. A winter survival school was
set up in the area for the jawans and the local people shown
their anxiousness about skiing. The venture of skiing was
initiated with the support of Major General Avadesh Prakash,
the general officer commanding of the Black Cat division.
Though the lofty peaks and snow clad mountains found in the
state throw up a host of challenges and adventure prospects
for the army and residents alike, everybody seems keen on
learning the ropes of the new sport. According to the army
press release the main objects of the army was to provide
the basic aspects of winter survival apart from training them
in skiing and other adventure sports to the residents of the
area. The skiing point will be able to receive a large number
of tourists during the winter.
