Royal revamp to woo visitors - 19/03/05

The Coochbehar Zila Parishad has taken up the cause to give the town a new looks a project of Rs. 4.75 crore. The sum of money will be used to renovate the temples and heritage sites in and around the town. A toy train will also be introducing to attract the tourists from all over the country and out of the country.

According to the Sabhadhipati Mr. Ananta Roy the town, after heritage overhaul, will grow as a famous tourist spot and it will receive a large number of visitors from all over the country. `Victor Palace which is in a vulnerable condition will soon be renovated. A chunk of the funds Rs. 75 lakhs will be used for this,` said Mr. Arabinda Sarkar, District Information and Cultural Affairs Officer.

`The State Govt. had sent a proposal to the centre stating that it wanted to convert the palace into a tourist lodge. The other scheme for upgrade of tourist spot has also been sent. The money for the projects we have received at the end,` said Mr. Sarkar. Already 3 crore has been received by the tourism department from the centre. The tourism department has already started their work and they have beautified the Naranarayan Park. It will be more attractive after the introduction of the toy train here in the park. 1 crore will be used to do it. The tourism department will use Rs 60 lakh to develop Salbagan as a picnic spot. The Rasmelamath will be given a facelift with facilities like rest rooms and toilets at a cost of Rs 25 lakh. Another Rs. 65 lakhs and Rs. 75 lakhs will be used to renovate the Madhupuran and Baneswar Temples and to construct a tourist reception centre.
