Water problem in kalimpong might be a
thing of the history soon. The incomplete reservoir, 1.85
km. from Algarah will soon be active. An amount of Rs. 31.25
crore has been proposed for four water reservoirs for Kalimpong
sub-division by the government sponsored Neora valley Scheme.
Due to fund constraints the two reservoirs which were started
at Algarah in 1990 could not be completed.
The water reservoir at Lava has not been
functioning since 1995 as cracks has developed in it. The
chief executive engineer of the Neora Khola Water Supply and
Maintenance Departments Mr. A. K. Guha said that tender has
been floated for one reservoir at Algarah to start work and
they expect that the work will start from the next month.
3 crore Rs will be used to built a 61-million litre water
reservoir and it would be built according to modern standard
and thus it does not develops cracks. Guha also said that
a team of Geological Survey of India has been investigating
the reservoir at Algarah and Lava. According to Mr. Guha,
they will send an estimate to the higher authorities by the
next month.
