Bridge
brings relief from risky ropeway journey - 21/03/05
A bridge has been constructed by the National
Hydroelectric Power Corporation on the river Teesta. The villagers
of the surrounding area has found the bridge a very helpful
and long waited means to get across to other parts of the
region. The villagers has been crossing the river through
the dangerous twin ropeway which was established almost 50
years back.
The new bridge established in January this
year will be withdrawn in May as the river will be diverted
to the left bank for further NHPC work. According to Mr. Sahadev
Khutia, chief engineer of TLDP-III (NHPC) said that we have
sanctioned an amount of Rs. 3 lakhs for setting up a suspension
ropeway and it will act more as a bridge. The ropeway will
carry maximum of 8 persons at a time. So there is nothing
to worry for the villagers. The villages like Nazok forest
busty, Sepkhola, Lower Dung, Suruk, Samthar and Mandir Khola
are all 85 km. away from the town and the distance has been
shorten to 60 km. after the construction of he bridge. Mr.
Bhim Bhujel said that we are all depends on agriculture for
our livelihood and it was difficult for us to carry the products
through the ropeway but the problems has partially solved
after the construction of the bridge. Mr. Ramond Dewan of
Sepkhola said that the bridge is the back bourn or the lifeline
for us. The villagers became worried after the decision of
NHPC officials to withdraw the bridge.
