Tourist fest to rock Pelling - 04/05/05

A three day tourist festival to show the potential of West and South Sikkim is going to be organized in Pelling after the grand success of Ravangla Tourist Festival last month. Chief Minister of Sikkim Mr. Pawan Kumer Chamling will inaugurate the festival on 8th may.

The festival is named after the guardian deity of Sikkim, Khangchendzonga Festival. The festival will be held at the Pelling helipad.

White-water rafting on the Rangit, kayaking, promotional trekking, mountain biking, sightseeing, fun sports and bird- watching are some activities which will be organized as the part of this festival. Not only the natural beauty but West Sikkim has its own history. Yuksom, the first capital of Sikkim, was witness in 1642 to the consecration of Phuntshog Namgyal, the first king of Sikkim. Rabdantse, where the capital was shifted later is a few kilometer away from Pelling. The ruins are being restored by the Archaeological Survey of India. Dubdi in Sikkim, the place is famous as the house of oldest monasteries. The festival must show the tourism aspects of this area.
