Indian aid for Druk road - 12/05/05

The single-lane road connecting the Bhutanese border town of Phuentsholing to Thimphu, the capital of the Himalayan kingdom is going to be widened by Indian Border Roads Task Force. `A Rs. 250/- crore project has been taken by the Indian Government which will start its` work this month.

The project has two phases and it is expected to be completed by 2010,` said Lieutenant-Colonel Gur Gopal Singh of the BRTF at Phuentsholing.

The double-laning of the 178.5-km road would cut down travel time from five to four hours. Mr. Singh also said that the proposed double lanning of the national highway between Paro and Chunzom was being surveyed by the BRTF. The Phuentsholing-Paro national highway was built by the West Bengal Public Works Department. Another Rs. 80/- crore would be spent for the upgradation of Paro Airport.
