Travel news of North East India

The Soviet connection

Darjeeling, Oct. 31 - The Darjeeling Carnival, 2005, starting from November 5, is set to revive the cultural connection between India and Russia.

Nicholas Roerich, a cultural icon and Russian painter who started his famous expedition to Central Asia from India alongwith his wife had a soft corner in their hearts for Darjeeling and Kalimpong.

The third annual residents’ festival endeavors to spread the indigenous culture beyond the geographical boundaries of the country. Held by the Darjeeling Initiative – an association composed of residents of Darjeeling – the highlight of the 10 day fair will be Russian art and photography exhibition presented by the Russian Cultural Centre.

During the early 1920’s, Roerich visited Darjeeling in an effort to spread Russian culture and after his death at Kullu valley in 1947, his wife Helena lived in Kalimpong till her death.

In Roerich’s works, like the Kanchenjunga, Sikkim Pass, His Country, The Great Spirit of the Himalayas and the Banners of the East series, his life was well portrayed.

The Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre will showcase the country’s rich culture in the Pan Indian Cultural Show. The festival will start everyday at 10 am and will go on till 7.30 pm.
There will be the usual arrays of foods and flowers besides programmes that will inspire cultural values among the visitors. A Bharatnatyam performance and sitar recitals by foreign students learning those arts will be an added attraction.
The DGHC, the municipality, the Darjeeling police, the British Council and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations will also participate in the celebrations.
