Darjeeling, Oct. 31 - The Darjeeling Carnival,
2005, starting from November 5, is set to revive the cultural
connection between India and Russia.

Roerich, a cultural icon and Russian painter who started his
famous expedition to Central Asia from India alongwith his
wife had a soft corner in their hearts for Darjeeling and
Kalimpong.
The third annual residents’ festival
endeavors to spread the indigenous culture beyond the geographical
boundaries of the country. Held by the Darjeeling Initiative
– an association composed of residents of Darjeeling
– the highlight of the 10 day fair will be Russian art
and photography exhibition presented by the Russian Cultural
Centre.
During the early 1920’s, Roerich visited
Darjeeling in an effort to spread Russian culture and after
his death at Kullu valley in 1947, his wife Helena lived in
Kalimpong till her death.
In Roerich’s works, like the Kanchenjunga,
Sikkim Pass, His Country, The Great Spirit of the Himalayas
and the Banners of the East series, his life was well portrayed.
The Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre will showcase
the country’s rich culture in the Pan Indian Cultural
Show. The festival will start everyday at 10 am and will go
on till 7.30 pm.
There will be the usual arrays of foods and flowers besides
programmes that will inspire cultural values among the visitors.
A Bharatnatyam performance and sitar recitals by foreign students
learning those arts will be an added attraction.
The DGHC, the municipality, the Darjeeling police, the British
Council and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations will
also participate in the celebrations. |
