Jalpaiguri, Nov. 9: The state forest department
has decided to use Global Positioning System (GPS) to monitor
elephant herds to reduce man-animal conflict.
Elephants
moving through the stretch starting from the Mechi River to
the Sankosh River on the Assam border will be tagged with
satellite collars. They follow the stretch of land that runs
through Mahananda, Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary, Gorumara
National Park and Buxa Tiger Reserve.
According to the forest minister, Jogesh
Burman, a team of experts from Indian Institute of Sciences,
Bangalore, is already in Jalpaiguri now to track the herds
and start the GPS. The elephant leading the herd will don
the collar with the Global Positioning System.
