Green protest rally in Malda

Malda, Nov. 15: Villagers from Habibpur rallied in protest against the callous felling of old neem trees that were centuries old near Bulbulchandi Primary Health Centre. The trees were cut down as ordered by the health karmadhakshya of the zilla parishad and Trinamul congress leader Sushanta Sarkar.

The villagers have lodged a police complaint against the leader and Chief Medical Officer of Health, Gopal Sarkar, has also ordered an inquiry into the incident. It was strange how a health worker could order the illegal and unethical felling of trees.

According to Sushanta Sarkar, the trees were cut down because a boundary wall was to be constructed around the health centre. However the Divisional Forest Officer remarked that all this was news to her and there was no verbal or written intimation whatsoever.
