Gangtok, Nov 16: A national committee
and workshop will be held at the forest department conference
hall for the development of the cold desert areas of Sikkim
- these areas have been declared as biosphere reserves.
The aim is to review the management and
implementation of improving the biosphere reserve of the North-Eastern
Himalayan Region.
According to the senior research officer
(wildlife), the discussion will be about the management and
research for the conservation of the bio-diversity. The Sikkim
government has created an action plan and estimated an amount
of Rs 1.75 crore for the development of the Kanchenjunga biosphere
reserve. The proposal will be presented for approval by the
national committee.
The biosphere directors of Sikkim, Assam,
Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya will make presentations at
the beginning of the programme, and the national committee
will discuss the possibilities of adding new regions to the
reserve. Representatives from West Bengal, Mizoram and Arunachal
Pradesh will also take part in the meet.
