Life turns them robbers

Kalchini, Sept. 30: The dire situations of the garden workers had forced them to rob European Club - established in 1918, named so because it was frequented by Europeans - of all its valuables, even the bricks.

Prem Lama, the pradhan of Kalchini gram panchayat, said he was witness to the whole incident and the crisis has forced the workers to act in such a manner.

`The prevailing situation in the garden is responsible for the actions of the workers. I`d informed the police and they visited the site but did not take any action`, said the pradhan.

A worker told without hesitation that he had taken some valuable timber so that he could afford two square meals a day.

It was found that the garden had no electricity for the last one month, since outstanding bills amounting to Rs 12 lakh remained unpaid to the power department. Therefore, the production has been stopped while the plucking is going on.
