Restoring the Mall`s magnificence

Darjeeling, Oct 2: They have finally got their acts together. The Darjeeling Municipality has dismantled the structures around the Mall to preserve the artistic beauty of the hills.

In a symbolic gesture the civic authorities dismantled the wall of a residential premise that was obstructing the panoramic view of the hills from the Mall. Though it is seen as a minor incident, the act has great significance for nature lovers.

The municipality has finally decided to take a stand and issue notices to illegal structures obstructing the view of the mountain. Before, the present civic body was heavily criticised for turning a blind-eye to the illegal constructions despite the bye-law passed by the previous board to restrict further construction. However, the bye-law is yet to be ratified by the state government.

Though the height restriction of 13.5 metres has been a controversial issue between the hill municipalities and the state government, there are many buildings being built which are more than the prescribed height.

The municipality has also started bringing down commercial hoardings not only from the Mall but from across Darjeeling. `We’ll remove hoardings that are soiled since such hoardings ruin the beauty of a place`, said the municipal commissioner.
