We won’t change our traditions: Gorkhas

Jalpaiguri, Oct. 10: The Gorkha community in Jalpaiguri has decided to go against the instruction of Subhas Ghising and worship Goddess Durga in the traditional manner they have done for centuries.

The GNLF chief had said that Gorkhas should stop idol worship and instead pay obeisance to stones or shilas. This directive was issued to demonstrate that the Gorkhas are actually tribal people; moreover, the Sixth-Schedule could not be implemented until the Gorkhas in the hills get tribal status.

However, in defiance of Ghisingh’s instructions to give up their age old tradition, around 2,000 Gorkhas today celebrated phulpati welcoming Devi Durga and strengthen bonds of friendship, love and faith.

`Like the Bengalis, our age old heritage of organising Durga Puja cannot be changed just because some political leader has a scheme in mind`, said Ravi Diyali, the president of Janakalyan Samiti, an organisation in Birpara.
