Rimpoche in Kalimpong, set for Bhutan

Pedong, Oct. 14: The two-year-old – 10th reincarnation of Shabdung Rimpoche – was welcomed in] Pedong at the Sang Chen Dorje Gumpha, which is 21 km from Kalimpong, today.

Following the death of the ninth reincarnation of Shabdung Rimpoche on April 5, 2003, the new Rimpoche was chosen in December 2004.
According to the secretary of the Gumpha, Sonam Dorjee, the Rimpoche will be taken to the monasteries he headed and will stay there for a day, and in the next morning will be taken to the Dalapchand monastery where people can meet him. In the same afternoon he will depart for Bhutan where he has been invited.

This is the first time a reincarnation of Shabdung Rimpoche is visiting Bhutan after more than 40 years. The ninth reincarnation of the same Rimpoche who belonged to the Drupka Kargyud sect was sent into exile in India in the early 1960s. The two-year-old tenth reincarnation will face a committee which has been delegated the responsibility of verifying the genuineness of the claim.

The Shabdung Rimpoche is the spiritual head of the Buddhists in Bhutan – he is supposed to be a threat to the government over his powerful influence among the citizens. This invitation to prove his identity has sent mixed signals from the government.

The tenth reincarnation was identified by Karmapa Urgen Thinley and was brought from eastern Bhutan in December 2004, since then he had been living in Bodh Gaya.

One of the claimants to the title of the Karmapa approved by the Dalai Lama also selected the tenth reincarnation. Then, the child monk was secretly transferred to Bodh Gaya in December 2004, because of the supposed life threats from vested political interests in Bhutan.
