Royal Bengal Tigers in trouble

Alipurduar, Oct 25: Eight Royal Bengal Tigers who formerly belonged to the Natraj Circus Company, Jharkhand, will be brought to the Hollong Range Office campus in Jaldapara, but will not be released in the South Khairbari Tiger Rehabilitation Centre.

The fates of the animals brought more than a month ago from Dankuni in Hooghly is uncertain. Only 15 cells, against the 30 cells that was planned to be constructed in the new centre will be set up now. The other 15 cells were planned to be constructed for the lions but it was found that the weather of the region was not favourable for them.

It is uncertain how the eight big cats will be kept in temporary shelter for an indefinite period of time.

The Chief Conservator of Forests (wildlife) northern region pleaded helpless saying that there were no adequate funds to construct night cells, even though when the Central Zoo Authority had already sanctioned 55 lakhs for the construction.
