Tourism in Dooars

Jalpaiguri, Aug 31: With North Frontier Railways` (NFR) success with package tours on the Darjeeling route, the NFR is all set to run special trains for tourists on the unused tracks of Dooars.

The special trains with package tours will have halts at tourist spots and meals on board.

The toy-train to Darjeeling was a resounding success among both domestic and international tourists.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the NFR posted at New Jalpaiguri, a proposal for developing a new circuit in the Dooars region has been forwarded to the concerned officials. It is right now waiting to be given the go.

The proposed broad-gauge line will pass through the Mohorgaon-Gulma tea estate before entering the foothills of Dooars, thereafter; it winds into the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, crosses the Teesta and enters the Dooars and the tea estates in the Malbazar-Chalsa area. Finally, the track will move across the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary before reaching Rajabhatkhawa – the station located within the Buxa Tiger Reserve. The track will end at Alipurduar station.

The train will halt at particular stations so that tourists can make quick tours of interesting spots, and refreshments will be available on board.

Samrat Sanyal, secretary, Eastern Himalayas Tours Operators` Association says that the route has great potential to attract tourists and it will give new life to the tourism in the region.
