Jalpaiguri, Sept. 4:
A seminar on Disaster Risk Management (DRM) was held by the
District Relief Department here today. It was sponsored by
the United Nations Development Project (UNDP), bringing together
environmental experts, senior administrative officers, functionaries
at the panchayat level and school students.
The seminar was aimed at building awareness and ensuring better
implementation of disaster management concepts at the micro-level.
Subir Sarkar, a noted environmentalist
and head of the weather station at North Bengal University
said: `Since, we live in a vulnerable zone where chronic natural
disasters are common, we must concentrate on effectively managing
the population and property in such areas to control the loss
that inhabitants suffer`.
The need to use scientific techniques instead
of old ones, and the training of more people on disaster management
was also emphasised in the seminar.
