Siliguri, Sep 12: A year
ago, Himalayan Nature and Adventure Foundation had created
a history of sorts in adventure sports in the region by scaling
the virgin peaks of Shinkhun, Himachal Pradesh. They have
done it again by conquering the 6,279-metre Mt. Jupkia - a
virgin peak again - in Himachal Pradesh.
The team members made it to the summit a
day before target because of favourable weather conditions
on September 7. They had begun from Siliguri on August 21.
Team leader Debabrata Ghosh, Prasenjit Roy, Soumen Dey, Dawa
Sherpa and Temba Sherpa - including twenty-two-year-old Rinchen
Chewang, who was one among the two female members and the
youngest in the team, also made it to the top.
The other team members included Upasana
Dewan, Debjyoti Dey and Rupak Das.
Extensive research of maps and local topography
was done and the group was also well equipped with a Global
Positioning System (GPS) to help them in the expedition. The
Indo-Tibet Border Police also led a helping hand during the
expedition.
The aim was to stimulate adventurism in
the youth of the region and instill courage to explore the
unknown. It was also a experiment to promote technical skills
and familiarity with technological equipments in mountaineering.
HNAF was supported by Himalayan Mountaineering
Foundation, New Delhi, in the expedition. HNAF is known for
work in environmental protection and promotion of adventure
sports - the foundation has made five successful expeditions
earlier. |
