Darjeeling,
Sept. 27: The splendid panoramic view from the Mall has been
blocked because of an inert civic body, uncaring residents and the
rising concrete jungle in Darjeeling.
Once, where one could have a breathtaking view of Jorethang town
and the Kanchenjunga, now stands a hotel, an administrative officer`s
building and a few guest-houses ruining the show.
Civic officials can do little about the illegal structures in the
town because of other powerful forces.
A commissioner of the town said, `A bye-law had been passed
by the former civic board disallowing construction on the far sides
of the roads. The law was kicked away as soon as the present civic
board came to power`.
`It is necessary for the local public and the tourists alike
to stand up for saving the beauty of this divine land. The battle
between the Hill municipality and the government over the restriction
of buildings’ height should also be resolved`, said
a retired ex-serviceman with passion.
