Encroachment over Mirik Lake

Darjeeling, Sept. 28: Nature lovers are worried that a beautiful tourist destination like the Mirik Lake has fallen prey to encroachers.

An extension wing of a hotel is jutting out into the lake to ruin the beauty of the magnificent lake. Despite the Land Reforms Department’s notice, the hotel-cum-restaurant owner has gone forward with the inauguration of the hotel on September 22.

Official of the Land and Reforms department said that the owner has been illegally occupying the 0.8 acre of land which belonged to the government.
According to the chairman of the Mirik municipality, the land-documents brought by the hotel owner comprising the main building were legal, but he never gave permission to extend the construction right to the lake.
The Additional District Magistrate has directed the officials to file an FIR against the hotel owner.
