Gangtok, April 19, 2006:
The US government is also endorsing the look east policy that
the Indian Government has recently adopted for the development
of the Eastern Region of the country. With this objective,
the US consulate is planning to set up more offices in the
eastern region and searching for areas where they can invest
in joint venture with Indian partners.
During his visit to Sikkim, Henry V. Jardine,
the US consul-general from Calcutta, disclosed this new plan
to the media. The consul-general said that the visits of the
Prime Minister to USA and the US President’s reciprocal
visit to India has provided new momentum to Indo-US ties as
number of trade and strategic agreements were signed. According
to Jardine, a US commercial service officer would be posted
in Calcutta for the first time to look at the possibilities
of business ventures in the region.
The consul-general during his trip in Sikkim,
travelled to Yuksom, Pelling and Pemayangtse before reaching
Gangtok. A visit was also paid at the Namgyal Institute of
Tibetology - earlier, the US government had provided a donation
of 34,000 USD to the institute. Jardine was impressed that
the funds had been put at good use for the securing and preservation
of religious manuscripts and artifacts. Before ending his
tour, he also commented that Sikkim had great potential for
the development of tourism, agriculture and floriculture. |
