The Bhangzang Salamander Lake

Nestled among the dunes of tea leaves, located 14 km from the picturesque town of Kurseong is the Bhangzang Salamander Lake with a new facelift. In August 2004, a landslide had occurred in the region, which covered the lake with debris, but, due to the hard work and initiative of the gram panchayat members of Margaret’s Hope and Gorabari, the lake’s ancient charm has been restored.

Long time ago it used to be a favorite hangout for British visitors, and people from the neighboring town of Darjeeling, Ghoom, Sonada and Kurseong. This place is a relatively unknown getaway among the tourist destinations in Darjeeling.

It is a beautiful green-tinged lake that shelters the rarest and most endangered species of salamanders – a species under threat of extinction. The enterprising members of the panchayat in the area have also started breeding 15,000 different species of fishes in the lake; there are also plans to start boating and horse riding facilities in the area.
