Travel news of North East India

Cruise in a `Volvo`

Passengers from Calcutta to Siliguri and vice versa will have the privilege of taking a luxury ride in a Volvo soon. Volvo India Ltd. has already entered the eastern India transport industry my plying its inter-city luxury buses from Calcutta to Puri, Orissa. Siliguri will be the first city to start the highly esteemed bus service in North Bengal.

According to sources, the bus service will begin within a few months; no exact date has been specified. The Volvo buses will run under the undertaking of the Calcutta State Transport Corporation. Authorities are hopeful that this service will take the bus transportation industry in the region to a higher level not achieved before. The South Asia Vice President of Volvo, Akash Passey, has even gone to the length of saying that this bus service will prove a threat to the turnover of the Indian Railways in the region.

After Siliguri, the bus service is due to hit the roads of Guwahati and parts of Northeast India.

However, this international class of buses, though expensive, will spare the people from the horrible service of the North Bengal State Transport Corporation and the South Bengal State Transport Corporation buses presently plying in the State. Passengers in the state prefer train or airline service rather than travelling by bus because of its poor standards.
