14, 2006: There is good news for bird lovers in North Bengal. Members
of a local NGO have spotted two species of hornbills in the Neora
Valley National Park, located 32 km from Kalimpong. During the survey,
two species of hornbills – pied hornbills and rufous-necked
hornbills - among the identified 10 was found by the NGO members.
The rufous-necked hornbill is among the most
endangered species of bird in the world.
The aim of the survey is to find out the reasons
for the gradual decline of the bird’s population. While the
first stage will involve surveying the birds, in the second stage
conservation strategies for the birds will be implemented. Till
date, areas in Arunachal Pradesh, Nepal and the Eastern Himalayas
were declared the natural habitat of these birds, it is for the
first time species of the hornbill has been found in the Neora Valley
National Park, located in North Bengal.
