Siliguri, Feb
19, 2006: A training workshop on theatre, organised by the Centre
for Local Languages and Culture and Paschim Bangla Natya Akademi
was held in the Rabindra Bhanu Mancha of North Bengal University.
It began on February 17 and lasted for three days ending today.
Several actors, directors and make-up specialists participated
in the workshop. The workshop was conducted by eminent theatre
personalities, and budding rural talents like Uttam Das was given
an opportunity to rub shoulders with them and learn from them.
Das’s rural theatre group is very popular in the villages
- and while he staged his theatrical skills even the veterans
learned a few things from the performance. There was theatre personalities
like Rishi Mukherjee, Meghnad Bhattacharya, Debesh Roy Choudhary
and Harimadab Mukherjee present in the workshop.
Members of the Akademi commented that mainstream Bengali theatre
is popular but it lacks originality and individuality. The platform
will provide directors to absorb a few points from the folk artists
which they can use to provide a flavor of originality in their
works. And originality can be expressed well when you acknowledge
your origins.
Harimadab Mukherjee commented that rural folk drama had a unique
sense of detachment and spontaneity. He said this was the feature
they should incorporate in mainstream theatres, too. Lessons on
various aspects of rural drama, acting, make-up and other theatrical
and technical points were provided to the mainstream theatre personalities
in the workshop.
Such events goes a long way in promoting rural art and providing
mainstream art the inspiration required to excel in their respective
fields. This not only provides encouragement to rural artists
but it also helps to protect and promote indigenous cultures and
traditions. |
