Gangtok, Jan 10, 2006:
Sikkim is busy preparing to host the 2,250th anniversary of
Mahaparinirvana of Lord Buddha. On the occasion prayers will
be made and thousands of butter lamps will be lit in front
of the shrine at 107 monasteries around the state and places
of worship for universal peace, harmony, love and prosperity.
Pawan Kumar Chamling, the chief minister
of Sikkim, attended a national committee meeting on the occasion
at New Delhi today. He stated his intention to build the Lord
Buddha Mahatma Gandhi University of Peace, Ecology, Bio-cultural
Harmony and Medicine in the state. The aim of the university
will be to work for peace and issues of development, environment
and medicines apart from other related issues. The chief minister
also demanded the inclusion of Namgyal Institute of Tibetology
among international organizations. That was not all; his third
demand was to start the Buddhist Tourism Circuit from Gangtok,
which he believes will enable Gangtok to become the centre
of Buddhist destinations in India and neighboring countries.
His last demand was to ask for support from
the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, to hold an international
conference on Buddhism and the Environment. The chief minister
is also bound for a tour to explore the South Asian countries
of Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore for tourism markets. |
