Gangtok, March 30, 2006:
Sikkim chief minister, Pawan Chamling has landed with yet another
success on his Europe tour. He was in Netherlands for five days
where he visited tourist spots, floriculture and horticulture farms
to assess the technique and marketing used by the Dutch in floriculture,
horticulture and agriculture. Also, he has been trying to start
a joint venture with Dutch companies in these areas.
According to government officials a memorandum
has been signed between the Sikkim government and a Dutch company
to start a joint venture for agro-business in the state. It was
observed that the main objective was to provide impetus to the floriculture
and horticulture business in the state by acquiring technical knowledge
and luring Dutch investors in the agro-business of the state.
The chief minister of Sikkim stated that, though
the state had immense potential in horticulture and floriculture,
it could not consolidate and go large scale due to lack of technological
knowledge and training, furthermore, there was also lack of adequate
private investment in the area.
The deal will provide the state to use techniques
like tissue culture and will provide opportunities for better marketing
and exports. It also aims to further bio-technological knowledge
for growing high value crops, food processing and cultivation and
export of organic vegetables. |
