State public works department minister
Mr Kshiti Goswami today visited the proposed museum here where
a vast collection of historic articles of the regime of erstwhile
Maharajas of Cooch Behar has been kept. These articles are
lying in a closed room out of public sight at a building near
Madan Modan Temple.
This building is the office of the executive engineer of PWD
(Roads), highway division, Cooch Behar.
With his visit, the citizens and also the PWD staff are expecting
that the necessary government approval may be issued soon
to turn it a museum so that general people could see the invaluable
collections.
This is for the first time that a minister has visited the
place to see the PWD's history when it was under a Princely
State.
Mr Goswami entered the room that is full with historic items
accompanied by the executive engineer, PWD (Roads), Mr Deepak
Kumar Singh, Mr Arup Jyoti Majumder and others. Mr Majumder
and his colleagues in the department had collected these articles
with keen interest for the last few years to make it a full-fledged
museum of public works related items. There are only two such
museums in this state ~ one in Darjeeling and the other in
Kolkata.
The minister saw the collections with eagerness. As a student
of history he questioned about the origin and usage of some
of the articles. He recalled his past days in Cooch Behar.
During his viewing of the age-old items, the minister praised
the initiative of Mr Majumder and others of the department
for their effort.
Admitting the need of a museum of this kind in Cooch Behar,
he opined that a specious place is needed to convert the place
into a museum. Money is also required for its implementation,
he said. After the setting up of museum, common people would
be allowed to see these articles, he said.
During his visit, the minister was presented with copies of
some documents including the clippings of The Statesman on
the proposed museum.
The PWD minister, Mr Goswami, inaugurated two road bridges
in Cooch Behar today ~ one at Gheghir-ghat along Cooch Behar-Dinhata
road and the other on Ghargharia river which will connect
Kaljani health centre to National Highway-31.
