The three-day seminar on conservation
of wildlife, organised by Global Tigers Forum at Madarihat
in Dooars, has come to an end. In the seminar it was decided
that officials of two countries ~ India and Bhutan ~ would
keep regular contact with each other and exchange information
on movements of wild animals, especially tigers and elephants.
The movements of these animals in particular zones would also
be recorded.
It was learnt that a policy would be authored jointly by the
forest officials and non-government organisations working
in the field of nature and environment in India and Bhutan
for conservation of wildlife in the two countries. They will
seek opinions from wildlife experts to make an effective policy.
It is necessary because the present relation between the experts
of the two countries is merely unofficial. Exchange of information
on movements of wild animals, especially tigers and elephants,
is necessary. Regular monitoring system on movements of the
animals can help the foresters to keep track of the animals
in the bordering areas of the two countries. To implement
this plan, a joint committee is essential and that would be
formed soon, sources said.
In the seminar, the participants emphasised joint campaign
on wildlife conservation. During the proposed awareness campaign
people will be able to know the importance of wildlife protection.
The 10-year (2006-2015) Tiger Action Plan drafted by Bhutan
was also discussed in the seminar.
It was learnt that a similar seminar would be organised in
Bhutan shortly.
In that seminar, the delegates will have to furnish the details
about the implementation of the proposals mooted at the Madarihat
seminar.
