Cooch Behar villages bask in glory

Pradhans of 16 gram panchayats of Cooch Behar district which were selected for the Nirmal Gram award for satisfactory performance in implementation of total sanitary programme, will receive awards from the President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, at Rastrapathi Bhavan in New Delhi on 5 May.
Sabhadhipati of Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad, Mr Jnanendra Chandra Chanda, said that the 16 GP areas of Cooch Behar were selected for the Nirmal Gram award for their laudable performance in implementing the sanitary programmes. “Residences of the villages under these gram panchayats are enjoying the hygienic facilities following the sanitation drive. The villages have turned into clean and environment friendly ones. The 16 GP areas were earlier declared as Nirmal Grams (clean villages) and now they are set to get the award from the President of the country,” Mr Chanda, said.
The CZP sabhadhipati said efforts are on to turn other GP areas of this district as Nirmal Grams. All the remaining GP areas in Mathabhanga-II block are expected to become totally sanitised soon, he hoped.
The pradhan of Chakchaka GP, Mr Abani Mohan Das, said they were feeling proud. “This would inspire cleanliness in villages,” Mr Das, said. He added that owners of new or under-construction houses without sanitary latrines would get no cooperation from the GP. “It should be a united effort to turn a village totally clean,” Mr Das, said. The 16 GPs selected for the Nirmal Gram award are Mathabhanga-II (6 GPs), Cooch Behar-II (Chakchaka GP), Tufanganj-II (1 GP), Dinhata-I (6 GP), Dinhata-II (1 GP) and Sitai (1 GP).
