The Second East Himalayan Expo, an international
trade fair, began today at the Pragati Bihar (Indira Maidan)
in Siliguri. The Mayor of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation
(SMC), Prof. Bikash Ghosh, inaugurated it.
Those present at the inaugural ceremony were Mr Jogesh Chandra
Barman, minister-in-charge of the backward classes welfare,
West Bengal government, Mr Nurul Islam, deputy Mayor, SMC,
Md Imran, deputy high commissioner of Bangladesh and Mrs Moni
Thapa, Sabhadhipati, Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad.
Mr Dilip Singh, chairman, SMC, presided over the function.
The fair, organised by the India Trade Promotion Organisation,
in collaboration with the Federation of Chambers of Commerce
and Industry, North Bengal (FOCIN), would continue till 31
December. Apart from Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand and
Myanmar have sent their representatives.
Inaugurating the trade fair, the Mayor said that Siliguri
is a rapidly developing metropolis and is the second largest
city in the state after Kolkata.
Its tremendous commercial potential has remained largely untapped,
in spite of its unique geographical position.
ITPO has chosen this city as the venue of the trade fair with
an eye on its stupendous possibility as a profitable centre
for conducting business.
Mr Barman thanked ITPO and FOCIN for choosing Siliguri as
the venue of the trade fair and expressed the hope that it
would go a long way in the promotion of business and trade
not merely in north Bengal, but in the entire north-eastern
region of India, which has so far remained somewhat backward
commercially.
