Tourism is assuming importance because
of its untapped potential to create employment along with
infrastructure development. And north Bengal holds a special
place when it comes to tourism, the state tourism minister,
Mr Manab Mukherjee, said here today.
Participating in an interactive session on tourism organised
by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Mr Mukherjee said
that the tourism potential of north Bengal is yet to be fully
exploited. “Only a part of its potential has been tapped
yet. The state government is trying to give tourism a boost,
but much depends upon the willingness of the industrialists
to help the government with enough investment. Once investment
comes, we shall begin developing the infrastructure with vigour,”
he added.
Speaking on the occasion, the additional chief secretary,
tourism department, Mr Bijoy Chatterjee, said that only a
quarter of the total tourists of the state come to north Bengal.
“It must be probed as to why the tourist inflow in this
region is so low, in spite of its natural attraction. The
government is aware of its duty, but there is a great need
for a public-private co-operation to speed up things,”
he added.
