Members of the Dinhata Mahakuma Byabasayee
Samity-2001 have urged the Railway authorities to attach a
passenger coach to the Teesta Torsa Express train for the
benefit of the traders as well as the common people. The DMBS-2001
members have also demanded that the Intercity Express be extended
up to Bamanhat.
The DMBS-2001 members met Mr Arjun Rakshit,
the divisional railway manager, Alipurduar division, at Alipurduar
yesterday and submitted a memorandum to him. They told the
DRM that Dinhata Railway Station was a centre for transportation
of jute and tobacco to Kolkata and other places of the country
till 1956. Now, the metre-gauge line between Bamanhat and
Cooch Behar is being converted into a broad-gauge. However,
the single track may do little help to the movement of passnger
as well as goods trains, they said.
“Dinhata is still a jute and tobacco growing area and
transportation by railway is cheaper than road transport.
The Railway authorities should consider extending facilities,
such as goods yard, sheds and sidings at the Dinhata Railway
Station. All facilities for passenger trains should also be
introduced here,” the traders demanded.
The DMBS-2001 members recalled that the
railway route once ran through areas now in Bangladesh. As
the relation among the SAARC countries is improving, the authorities
should consider laying the broad-gauge track so that it could
be extended to Bangladesh. It was the shortest route to travel
to Kolkata in those days.
Secretary of DMBS-2001 Mr Samir Chowdhuri said the DRM, Mr
Rakshit, heard their points patiently and assured them of
taking up the issue with the authorities concerned.
The copies of the memorandum have also been sent to the Union
railway minister, Mr Lalu Prasad, Railway Standing Committee
chairman Mr Basudeb Acharya, MP (Rajya Sabha) Mr Tarini Roy
and MP (Lok Sabha) Mr Hiten Barman.
