To stop the use of plastic carry bag below
40 microns, the Raiganj Municipality today launched an awareness
campaign distributing leaflets among traders of different
markets.
According to the Raiganj Municipality sanitary inspector Mr
Sudeb Das, carry bags dumped carelessly all over are clogging
the drains, which in turn are developing into breeding ground
for mosquitoes, making the threat of malaria very real. "Apart
from this, such mindless dumping of plastic carry bags is
contaminating ground affecting human health," he added.
Highlighting the ill effects of plastic bag use and careless
dumping, the Raiganj Municipal authorities have urged traders
to appeal to customers to bring bags made of either jute or
cotton to carry goods.
Mr Mohit Sengupta, chairman of Raiganj Municipality said:
"A seminar was held on the subject a fortnight ago at
Raiganj Bidhanmancha in which traders and business associations,
social workers and women of self-help groups were urged to
cooperate to make the exercise successful. They have all promised
to extend their cooperation," the chairman, said.
He further said that municipal authorities visited the different
markets in the town and spread leaflets urging traders to
discourage the use of plastic carry bags below 40 microns.
"To make the programme a success the municipality would
hold another seminar on July 30 and ask members of the different
market committees in Raiganj and the leaders of both West
Dinajpur Chamber of Commerce and the Raiganj Merchant Association
to extend their support," Mr Sengupta, added.
