Street lights to go digital in Siliguri

To provide better service, save power and avoid human error, the Siliguri Municipal Corporation has decided to digitise the operating system of the street lights in the town. The SMC would install self-timers to transformers to control the operating system of the streetlights.
The SMC had so far been depending on manual operation of the streetlights. Under the system, people appointed by the SMC used to switch on the streetlights at dusk and put those off in the morning.
“The system is prone to human error. If the person employed does not switch on or off the lights in time, civic service suffers. So, we have decided to mordenise the system by installing timers, which is not dependent on anyone. The timers would activate and deactivate the streetlights automatically,” said MIC electricity Mr Dilip Roy.
The SMC had installed timers on the town’s main arteries like Hill Cart Road, Burdwan Road, Station Feeder Road and Vivekananda Road in the year 2006. The installation work is gong on at Sevoke Road and Eastern bypass. Buoyed by the success the SMC authorities have decided to install the same system in the entire town.
Mr Roy said: “The system would be place in the whole town by next year. First we would install the system in the main roads of the wards and then cover every street.”
According to the official report, the cost of a timer is around Rs 9,000 and the SMC has already sanctioned 400 self-timers for the town.
