Topical vocation for Kurseong youth

With the arrival of the monsoons, the administration here has decided to train the youth on disaster management. The exercise is a timely one, since the Kurseong sub-division is prone to landslides.
The Kurseong sub-divisional relief officer, Mrs Asha Mukhiya Lama said that “this is a joint effort with the Kurseong civic body, as well as the gram panchayats of the sub-division. We have asked the civic body to send at least two youths from each of the wards. Similarly, we have also asked the gram panchayat pradhans to send two youths from each ward for the training.”
Mrs Lama also informed that the trained youths would assist in the carrying out of relief work in the future. She acknowledged the lack of adequate manpower when disaster strikes. “Any additional assistance is of help,” she added.
The administration already has civil defence volunteers, which comprises the youths. “The civil defence volunteers are the registered ones, who receive some amount from the government. The youths who would receive training from now on would be paid depending upon the funds available,” the officer informed.
The Kurseong Municipality has 20 wards, which means around 40 youths would be participating in the training programme. Officials from the West Bengal fire services department, as well as civil defence volunteers would be imparting training to the youths. “Relief techniques like tying a knot with a rope, climbing with the help of a rope, rescuing a person buried under the debris are some of the basic skills that would be taught to the participants,” a fire department official, said.
Mrs Lama, however, said that the list of youths who would be participating in the training have not reached her department. “Once the list reaches us we would be able to start the training,” she said.
