Flyover not likely to end traffic snarl-ups: Siliguri mayor

With four-days to go for the inauguration of the first flyover of the town, Siliguri mayor Mr Bikash Ghosh today said that the Mahabirsthan flyover alone would not ease the traffic congestion plaguing the town.
“The flyover would hardly relieve us of the chronic traffic jams and there is the need for building a few underpasses, over bridges and more flyovers to rectify the malady,” the mayor said.
Admitting that traffic situation was getting worse by the day in the town, Mr Ghosh said, the civic body has identified three points for the construction of railway underpasses and those are ~ Bagrakote, Mahananda Para and at Dangipara crossing, which connects Vivekananda Road.
He further added that the Railways would build an over bridge at Junction Station, while the construction of a flyover stretching from Panitanki More to Sevoke More in the town, was also in the pipeline.
“The current population growth in Siliguri is about 48 per cent. Corresponding to that, the number of traffic is also witnessing a sharp growth. On the face of these trends, there is much to be done to ensure a congestion-free life out here,” the mayor said.
The Mahabirsthan flyover is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 18.16 crore, equally shared by the Railways and the state government. While the Hasmichowk-Desh Bandhu Para arm of the flyover is ready and is scheduled for inauguration by the chief minister on 30 June, the Station Feeder Road arm is still under construction.
According to the mayor, the police are yet to chalk out a traffic direction for the plying of vehicles on the flyover. However, both-way traffic movement would be allowed, he clarified.
