Sikkim observed the 22nd birth anniversary
of the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa Ogyen Thinley Dorjee at the Rumtek
monastery near Gangtok yesterday. About 3,000 people including
officials, students and tourists congregated to offer Mandala
to his holiness, the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Thinley Dorjee, whose
throne is still waiting for him at Rumtek Monastery.
Men and women of all ages were seen offering khadas (traditional
silk scarf) and incense to the image of the Karmapa and the
monks chanted hymns to observe the ceremony.
A large cake was made to celebrate the birthday. Pieces of
the cake were distributed among the people. Traditional cultural
programmes were also held at the venue, which enthralled the
tourists. “I don’t understand anything about Buddhism
but I am very keen to know,” said Mr David Ellifson
from Canada. “This colourful dance was really unique,”
he added.
Rumtek Dharma Chakra Center (RDCC), a trust of the Karmapa,
organised the event. The trust gifted bed sheets, pillowcases
and towels to 60 orphans from Bal Niketan Orphanage.
