The two-day workshop organised to train
the police on how to combat human trafficking and sexual exploitation
of women and children, concluded here yesterday.
The workshop was organised by Impulse Network, Shillong, in
collaboration with Human Rights Law Network (HRLN), Sikkim
unit and the Police Training Centre, Sikkim, with support
from United Nation Office on Drugs And Crime (UNODC). It was
held at the Police Training Centre in Ranipool.
The objective of the workshop was to sensitise and create
awareness about human trafficking and sexual exploitation
of women and children among the 76 trainees of the police
training centre.
“The way human trafficking has increased, it cannot
be fought independently by the NGOs or the law enforcement
agencies. They should instead join hands to combat the menace,”
said Mr Rosanna Lyngdoh, programme manager, Impulse NGO Network.
Training of law enforcement agencies is important to sensitise
them about the reason and consequences of human trafficking
and what kind of role they can play to combat trafficking,
the NGO members, said.
The training was also aimed at sensitising the police personnel
about different provisions in the constitution to deal with
human trafficking and sexual exploitation cases.
The members of the NGO also appreciated the contributions
made by Dr Doma Bhutia, advocate HRLN, Sikkim unit and
Mr Tashi Rapten Barfungpa, advocate, The Firm, who had acted
as resource persons during the workshop. It has also expressed
its gratitude to Mrs Sarda Rani, senior superintendent, Police
Training Centre, for her help.
