Sikkim chief minister Mr Pawan Kumar Chamling
has planned a slew of projects to improve road connectivity
in the state within the next few years. Addressing a mammoth
gathering here today on the occasion of SDF’s 15th foundation
day, Mr Chamling said tenders would be floated to link all
the villages in the state by road within the next two years.
“Work for the road connection in villages would commence
in the next two years”, he assured.
The chief minister who is also the president of SDF, said
Nathula-Siliguri road would be double-laned in the next two
years. He announced that the double laning of state highways
has also been sanctioned.
“Sikkim is also set to get included in the country’s
rail map. Within the next five years, rail link would be extended
up to Rangpo. Preliminary studies are on and funds has also
been sanctioned”, Mr Chamling, said.
Mr Chamling said he would meet the Union railway minister,
Mr Lalu Prasad, in New Delhi and place his demands for railway
link up to Nathula.
The chief minister is leaving for New Delhi tomorrow for allocation
of annual plan money for Sikkim.
Mr Chamling said as far air link is concerned, efforts are
on to convince the authorities concerned. “We are signing
an MoU with SERA in New Delhi on 7 March to work for an airport
at Pakyong”, he said. A total of Rs 349 crores has been
allocated for the airport.
Work for the airport would commence within the next three
months. The first airplane would fly from Pakyoung airport
within 15 months, he claimed.
Once this airport comes up, tourism and floriculture would
get a boost, the CM, said.
Mr Chamling added that the state government would be procuring
an 11-seater helicopter in April and heli-services would start
in all the helipads of the state.
The chief minister also chose the occasion to highlight the
achievements made by the SDF in its 12 years of governance.
“The party remains committed to the progress of Sikkim,”
he said.
The reforms adopted by the SDF government in key sectors,
such as tourism, health and education was strongly highlighted
by the chief minister. |
