Sonia likely to inaugurate Sikkim flower show

A riot of colours showcasing the rich floral diversity of the Himalayan state is set to enthrall flower enthusiasts here and what is more, the UPA chairperson Mrs Sonia Gandhi is likely to inaugurate the Sikkim Flower Festival 2007. There is also chance that Priyanka Gandhi might accompany her mother.
The Sikkim Flower Festival Committee officials who are organising the event claimed that Mrs Gandhi would be inaugurating the fair. The floral event would be hosted at White Hall premises. “UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi is expected to inaugurate the event which would greatly enhance the festival”, said Mr S T Lachungpa, member, organising committee claimed.
It may be recalled that the Nehru-Gandhi family’s tryst with the orchids of Sikkim began last year when a new orchid species of Sikkim, Capaleya orchid was named after the daughter of Priyanka Gandhi during a function in New Delhi.
Though an official confirmation is still awaited, it was learnt that Priyanka Gandhi may also show up during the festival.
Sikkim tourism and the Nayuma family would be sponsoring the event. The Nayuma family has set a total prize amount of Rs 2 lakh for the winners in the festival as ‘Bisnu Maya Rai Sunakari Purashkar’. There are other attractive prizes in the festival as well, the committee said.
The committee has informed that the interested persons can enlist in the festival on March 16 and 17 free of cost. The winners would be selected on March 17.
Interested persons have been requested to bring self-grown orchid species for the festival. The orchid competition is open to all states and countries.
