Going against the general perception that
flavoured tea cannot be produced in the plains, some of the
tea estates in the Dooars recently started producing flavoured
orthodox tea. The move is something new in the Dooars. However,
if it clicks, it would boost the ailing tea industry in the
region, tea officials, said.
While four to five tea estates are producing aromatic orthodox
tea on an experimental basis in small quantities, the New
Glanko Tea Estate at Malbazar, has started full-fledged production
of the same.
“At New Glanko, from early this month, we are producing
200 kgs of flavoured orthodox tea per day. Proving others
wrong, we have almost matched the standard of the world famous
Darjeeling tea,” said New Glanko proprietor, Mr SK Saria.
If the latest step succeeds in the other tea estates of Dooars,
this may prove a good omen for the ailing tea industry of
the region, they said. This is because, the demand for orthodox
tea is on the rise, both in domestic as well as international
markets. The Tea Board has even announced a subsidy of Rs
3 per kg on production of orthodox tea in place of the CTC.
Like other plain areas in the country, tea estates in the
Dooars are also into the production of CTC and green tea to
a limited extent. Every year, roughly 140 millions of CTC
and green tea are produced in the region.
